#worldbookday, you say? I could go on forever about what books have given me, so instead I’ll share my reading past, present and future: . Past: #themermaidandmrshancock, recommended by @lucyrtan. Bold, delightfully peculiar, an 18th century novel turned on its head. . Present: #headsofthecoloredpeople by @nafissa.thompson.spires. I am learning so much from this collection, not just about race and gender and identity but in terms of craft and technique. Read the title story to see what short stories can be & do. . Future: Maggie Nelson’s slender and very blue #bluets.
I began my #laikashawl in November, and it’s finally off the needles. This knit started with the yarn. I came across @annabel_textiles on IG and quickly fell in love with her gorgeous color sense and ethical, sustainable process: she sources yarn from independent, local farmers and dyes it naturally on a small scale. This is her Corriedale DK, which has a lovely rustic feel and an unexpected sheen. . I wanted a pattern that showed off the yarn, so I picked @lilalu72’s Laika. A tutorial for knitting tiny cables without a cable needle made the diamond portion go by much more quickly (I’ll link it in stories). It’s snuggly and blanket-like, perfect for this strange Wisconsin spring (70 degrees yesterday, 40s and snow tomorrow!). . I was especially happy to finish this piece because right now, it feels like everything I knit ends up in the frog pond (that’s a #knittingfail, for you knitting muggles): after three (three!) failed sweaters, I finished the entire body of a fourth before realizing that, due to an idiotic gauge mistake, it was seven inches too big. I ripped it out yesterday, the kitties watching happily as I rewound every painful skein of yarn. What was your most brutal frog? 🐸
Hearing that @emmaroberts is dipping into my first book, #theanatomyofdreams, sent me back down to the rabbit hole to when I was a baby writer with a blurry cell phone camera and seriously subpar signing skills. Witness the first book I ever signed, for a reader named Wendy who was very understanding about this particular situation. (And swipe for a shot of the real sign that inspired Snake Hollow, Keller’s research compound!)
I’ve had about six weeks off Instagram, and while there was a lot that I missed (especially keeping up with all of you!), the truth is that this period has been really damn hard. For most of February and March, my migraines have been daily, and reduced screen time seems to help. It’s also important to me to be as authentic as I can on social media (is that an oxymoron?!), and I didn’t feel right posting pretty pictures when my reality was so different. . I’m hesitant to write about my pain, not least because I know how much I have to be grateful for—and how many others suffer with as much or worse. And beneath that, or beside it, is the fact that being open makes me feel vulnerable and sometimes slightly broken, and that’s hard to let people see—but I share it in the hope of being honest, and to communicate that I see your pain, too, even if I don’t know what it is. It may be a cliché, the idea that everyone is fighting their own battle, but my god is it true; that ethos has always driven my writing, and it drives me as well. . So I’ll be a little less active here for a while. I’m trying a number of new things, and trying to stay hopeful, and working when I can; today the pain is low enough that I took myself and my Goldfinch to a coffee shop; we’ll see how that goes. As for #thegoldfinch, I’ve read it before but I’ve had a feeling for months that I have to read it again. I’m not sure why. I liked but didn’t love it the first time around, and it’s 750 pages, and I’d RATHER be reading something else, but my gut says there’s a reason, and I’m trying to listen very closely, these days, to what my gut says. . I’m thankful for a publisher who supported me when I made the difficult decision to cancel my spring events, and a spouse whose undying devotion carries me, and soul friends who have seen me through this for years, and fellow writers who just GET it, even if they don’t have migraines themselves.
