Consulting Services

The literary world can feel like a fortress, even to those who study writing in college or graduate school. My own artistic education provided an excellent technical foundation but little in the way of career preparation, so I learned about the industry while navigating it in real time. I now offer one-on-one career consulting services to support emerging writers of all backgrounds.

While I don’t read or critique manuscripts, I provide guidance and education on a variety of subjects, from fitting writing time into a busy life to submitting to agents, publishing and promoting a book, and beyond. I also teach workshops on the business of publishing—from finding an agent to publishing a debut novel—at book festivals, writing conferences, and elsewhere.

TESTIMONIALS

“How grateful I am that Chloe Benjamin said ‘Yes!’ to being a part of Northern California Writers’ Retreat. Chloe spoke to our writers about her publishing experience and her research techniques and opened our eyes to the myriad ways a writer goes about collecting details that will help create more depth and insight in their books. She’s clear and honest, a refreshing breeze opening the publishing curtain and letting us all peek inside. Any writer would be lucky to learn from her experiences.”

“Chloe is truly the writer whisperer. For help navigating difficult career decisions, sustaining my self-confidence, and fortifying my writing practice, she has proved invaluable, offering both encouragement and real know-how from her years of experience in the publishing industry.”

“I am in the very early stages of my writing career. Having written, tweaked, and edited my first novel, I began the querying process last summer. My meeting with Chloe was helpful in so many ways. She asked me thoughtful questions about my novel and my future goals, which made me feel like a writer, not just a person who writes, for the first time. Together, we did some research on agencies I'm interested in, and she answered all questions I had about communication with agents. She also gave me tips for finding the best comp titles to compare my novel to. I expressed my self doubt after some disheartening experiences, and she shared a lot about her own journey. I came away from our consulting meeting feeling very encouraged and excited to keep going. I felt welcomed into the writer community by Chloe, and it means the world to me.”
